The ponytail originated all the way back in 1600 BC and were worn by Egypcian women and Roman dancers. It had then spread to the Mayan men in Central America in the 6th century and were for ornamental purposes as a wide ponytail or several smaller ones.

It then came over to Britain in the 18th century where the men once again were wearing the style along with wigs. While the women could not go out in ponytails because they would not be seen as respectful women and only little girls could wear ponytails.

After that the ponytail had spread out world wide, the ponytail had become suitable for all occasions
and all events.

That has been the timeline of the ponytail, hope you enjoyed it and learned something new.

The Ponytail

Hey everyone,

Welcome to my blog on the geography of ponytails. We will be going through its history and its evolution and much more!

Of coarse we all know what the standard ponytail is... hair swept back from the face secured to the back or top of the head with a hair tie, clip or any other piece of hair piece. The ponytail can be worn on the side, base, top or middle of the head and even split down the middle into 2 'ponytails'.

In the Georgian era all the way through to the 20th century, women were not seen outside with such an informal hairstyle like the ponytail but nowadays they are worn by both women and girls for formal and informal events and even activities like exercising and even just to keep the hair out of their eyes.

Men of coarse are quite different. In Europe near the end of the 18th century, most men had long hair and was tied with a ribbon however the British Army had to have short haircuts due to regulations. Then it came back in the 1970's - 1980's due to the rock era and were seen as 'edgy'. Now a days there are very few men with long hair for ponytails but there are still a handle that tie their hair up into a 'man bun' or even pinned back.

That's all for this post, hope you enjoyed and stay tuned for my next post.
